Wood-plastic composite is a mixture of a non-hydrophilic plastic and hydrophilic cellulose fibers. so the adhesion at the interface between cellulose fibers and plastic will be weak and the stress transfer between these two phases will be weak. Therefore, to solve this problem, couplers are used in making plastic wood.
The effect of coupling agents on composites includes dispersion of wood fibers in the polymer background, bonding of fibers to the polymer background, increasing physical and mechanical strengths, reducing water absorption, dimensional stability and thermal stability.
Bonded polyolefins are the most widely used couplers in the plastic wood industry.
Foamers
The polymers used in the manufacture of plastic wood composites have a high density and, by nature, the product produced also has a high density. Therefore, in some cases, in the manufacture of plastic wood composite, foaming agents are used in applications that do not require high mechanical strength. Foaming agents reduce the density of plastic wood and increase its impact resistance.

To produce a wood-plastic product with the desired color, common dyes are used in the plastics industry (paints and pigments). The difference between paints and pigments is that the dyes dissolve in plastics but the pigments do not dissolve in plastics. They create color due to distribution in the product. Using paints, a wide range of plastic wood products with different colors are produced.
